Keeping School Comms Running with UPS and Failover Internet

Published 2nd May 2025

In today's digital age, uninterrupted connectivity and communication is crucial for schools to function efficiently. In times where the power is down it is essential that schools can still communicate with the outside world especially with parents & guardians. One effective solution is to pair small rack mounted UPS devices with a failover internet line, this combination ensures schools can maintain phone systems even in the event of a power outage.

A rack mounted UPS is a small device which can be installed into your school network cabinets.  They provide backup power to critical equipment, such as routers, switches, and servers, during power failures. This ensures that the school's network remains operational, allowing staff and students to continue using internet-based resources without interruption. The UPSs can also protect sensitive equipment from power surges and fluctuations, extending their lifespan and reliability. See DFE guidelines to meet standards in the link below.

Failover internet lines also provide an additional layer of redundancy to school communications by providing and alternative connection should your primary line fail. These lines are setup to seamlessly switch to your second line, ensuring continuous internet access. This is particularly important for maintaining communication systems, such as VoIP phones, which are essential for school admin teams in emergency situations.

By adopting rack-mounted UPSs and failover internet lines, schools can create a robust and redundancy solution, safeguarding their pupils and operations whilst ensuring that they remain connected when it matters most.
